About NCERT Doctoral Fellowship 2024


The NCERT Doctoral Fellowship for PhD offers young researchers the opportunity to conduct research in the field of education from various gender perspectives and to build a knowledge base of education in the contemporary context. The Fellowship is offered to all candidates who wish to work in the field of education-related research.

Applications are invited for the award of up to 10 NCERT Doctoral Fellowship in various disciplines related to education and directly related to education.

The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) is an autonomous organization that has been established by the Ministry of Quality Resource Development of the Government of India and the Education Departments of the States/UTs to advise and assist them in their formulation and implementation. Policies and major programs in the field of education especially for improving the quality of school education.

NCERT Doctoral Fellowship For Phd Amount


  • NCERT Doctoral Fellows will receive a fellowship of INR. 23,000/- per month (for Non-NET) and INR. 25,000/- per month (in case of NET-qualified candidates) for a maximum period of three years from the date of permanent Ph.D. registration and date of selection in NCERT. 
  • They will also receive a contingency grant of INR. 10,000/- per annum during this period.

NCERT Doctoral Fellowship: Eligibility Criteria 


Students must fulfill all the eligibility criteria given below to apply.

  • Good academic record with at least 60 percent marks at graduation and post-graduation level.
  • Candidates registered for a PhD with a recognized university degree or working towards their PhD thesis are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates should be below 35 years of age as of the last date of the application form.

Selection Process


NCERT will design the procedure for the shortlisting of applicants. 

  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for an interview, which may also include a presentation of the proposals. 
  • Candidates will be paid second (sleeper) class train fare by the shortest route for attending the interview-cum-seminar. 

Reservation of Seats 

The statutory provisions for the reservation of seats will apply to the candidates belonging to different categories.

Disbursement of Fellowship 

The NCERT will credit the monthly Fellowship to the savings bank account of the Fellow. Annual contingency grant to the extent of actual expenditure incurred but not more than INR.10,000/- per annum will be credited to the account of the Fellow after receipt and scrutiny of the bills/vouchers submitted by the Fellow duly signed and countersigned by the supervisor and Head of the Department. 

Terms & Conditions of NCERT Doctoral Fellowship


  • Four out of 10 fellowships are reserved for 4 Regional Institutes of Education (RIEs), one each for Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Mysore.
  • The fellowships will be limited to extremely deserving candidates only. If suitable candidates are not available, the Council may not select all 10 Fellows. 
  • The candidate applying for a Doctoral Fellowship should have either completed a predoctoral research methodology course or enrolled/selected for such course for the appropriate duration as approved by UGC. 
  • Each Doctoral Fellow will be required to present a seminar at the end of each semester. 
  • The NCERT Doctoral Fellow will be required to contribute to the RIE teaching program, field research, and the curriculum development and textbook development programs of NCERT for 30 days a year. 
  • The Doctoral Fellow will be under obligation to present a public lecture on larger issues of public interest relevant to their doctoral research work if so invited.
  • The candidate will submit, with their applications, the CV of the research supervisor, which should indicate the research work done by them in the last five years.

  • Application should be filled in the prescribed format available on the NCERT website (www.ncert.nic.in).

  • The last date for receiving the completed application is one month from the publication of the advertisement in the newspaper.
